The Ministry of Education today launched the National Accelerated Adult Literacy Program (NAALP).

The Ministry of Education today launched the National Accelerated Adult Literacy Program (NAALP), establishing a coordinated national approach to expand learning opportunities for adults who missed out on formal education.

The launch brought the purpose of the program into clear view. Adult learners demonstrated progress in reading and writing and shared how literacy is already helping them engage more confidently in their homes, livelihoods and communities.

NAALP will build on these existing efforts and expand access through a structured, accelerated learning pathway that combines literacy and numeracy with practical learning in livelihoods and financial literacy, health and wellbeing, life skills, and civic participation.

The first phase will focus on Grand Cape Mount, Bong, Grand Bassa, Gbarpolu, Lofa and Rivercess Counties, with Liberia working toward increasing adult literacy from 58.6 percent to at least 62.8 percent by 2029.

Importantly, this will require more than Government action alone. At today’s launch, market women, teachers, school leaders, community representatives, civil society organizations, faith-based institutions and development partners signaled their willingness to help identify learners, mobilize communities and support implementation.

The Ministry recognizes the organizations and individuals that have sustained adult literacy work across Liberia and will continue working with them as NAALP moves from a national framework to learning opportunities within communities.

As Liberia prepares for 2027 as the National Year of Literacy, the focus now shifts from launching the program to reaching adults, supporting their learning and demonstrating measurable results.
