MINISTRY OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES ACTIVITIES FOR LIBERIA’S 179TH NATIONAL FLAG DAY ANNIVERSARY
The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Education and in collaboration with relevant ministries and agencies, will commemorate Liberia’s 179th National Flag Day Anniversary on Monday, August 24, 2026, under the national theme, “From Heritage to Hope: The Flag That Unites Us.”
Activities leading to the national observance will begin on Friday, August 21, with a dress rehearsal at 7:00 a.m. at the Barclay Training Center (BTC), involving approximately 1,200 students from 30 senior high schools.
On Monday, August 24, the official commemoration will begin at 6:00 a.m. at BTC with the National Flag Hoisting Ceremony, followed by a Competitive Drill Competition and Pass-in-Review featuring participating schools. Awards will be presented in recognition of excellence in salute, discipline, and appearance.
The celebration will continue at 10:00 a.m. at the Executive Pavilion on Front and Randall Streets in Monrovia, where national leaders, government officials, educators, students, and distinguished guests will gather for the official indoor program.
A major highlight of this year’s observance will be the reintroduction of civics education in primary schools and the official launch of standardized Civics textbooks. This initiative forms part of the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen students’ understanding of Liberia’s history and national identity, democratic values, constitutional governance, citizenship, and civic responsibility.
National Flag Day activities will also be held across Liberia’s 15 counties, providing students and communities throughout the country an opportunity to participate in the observance and reflect on the values, history, and shared national identity represented by the Liberian flag.
The Ministry of Education encourages schools, families, communities, and citizens across the country to participate in the commemoration and use the occasion to deepen respect for Liberia’s national symbols and the responsibilities of citizenship.
